Here you have relatively recent figures from 02/2017.
The median is at 3000€ gross. So quite far from your 4000€ net.

An acquaintance with 75k€ gross + wife working had a house built for 600k€ (with a 10-year fixed interest rate) and leased 2 new cars. I don't need to look on the street to know that many show-offs are out there. I prefer people who have a 10-year-old Passat in their carport and the wife drives a 15-year-old Polo.

You don't have to pretend to be someone when you are a nobody.

Not every degree can earn you 4000€ net. There are also people who study according to their personal preferences/interests and then earn 1950€ net. That wouldn’t be my thing, but you shouldn’t generalize the topic.

As for leasing, any normal clerk or university graduate earning 1950€ net can afford a 5 Series BMW. Whether you want that is rather the question.

Thank you.

But this table is somehow not interesting to me because it also includes the "almost Hartz IV recipients" and those earning +6-700 (sounds harsh, but it's true. Gross 3000 means net 1950,-). And then it distorts what I mean...

I don’t want to start a fundamental discussion again, but anyone in Germany who thinks that with 300 net they are above Hartz IV and belong to the middle class has read too much Bild.

And you already recognized it right... many can lease a 5-series on a low salary. But 5-series, 6-series, 7-series, G55, Cayenne, Maserati, S-Class and house and second and third car and wife doesn’t work and 2 kids and vacation 2-3 times a year… that’s not sustainable without money. And there are TENS OF THOUSANDS of those!

You say yourself "One (1) acquaintance of yours has...". Look how many others… won’t be many. The majority won’t be.

Those who studied, have at least 5 years of work experience, and then earn under 3000 net at 40 hours/week, they are doing something wrong somehow… They might as well have done a commercial apprenticeship and work at a bank counter. (Where probably with all benefits they might even earn more).

In my area, about 150 people with a university degree work and we pay a collective wage, so we are quite representative. The average earns around 55k gross with 5 years of professional experience. If the person is the sole earner, 3000k net per month is quite achievable. Without a management position, however, it is extremely difficult to reach 4000.

Farilo, now that’s what I call really arrogant and out of touch with reality. :-( Do you really believe that, for example, pretty much all social workers are doing something wrong? There are simply jobs where, despite having a degree, you often earn "nothing" – at least not the 3,000 net you demand! Even in our authority, there are plenty of graduates who are classified comparable to the 3rd QE and earn less than 3,000 net (and please, this is not meant to lead to public sector bashing again! but only to show that, according to you, very many people are doing a lot wrong).

Normally, the woman would drive the Passat and the man the Polo, right?

My respect for the profession, but yes, they do something wrong! The teaching profession in Germany needs a completely new image and also better pay!
