It's not. No sugarcoating helps. Anything is better than wasted time. I was once that "highly specialized" and could only work in Hamburg with a daily 30-minute commute each way. Pointless life. 2.5 years - then it was history. Learned a lot - but above all, not to waste life on the road.

So we can already save more now, that is no problem, we also do not live extravagantly. The situation with the children has also been considered, because our parents live east of Munich near us, they will retire very soon and would then partially take care of the children. That is also the reason why we want to stay in this area.

Hi,

If you already have a problem with 30 minutes, then good luck in the real world. How exactly do you expect it to be any shorter unless you basically live in the office? 30 minutes is maybe 15 km by car or 5 km by public transport. That’s already pretty close.

Besides, you often only have limited influence on that. My breadwinner now also wants to get out of the existing office building (which is a good thing, that place is about to collapse) and consolidate 3 locations in Nuremberg into one. In itself, a great idea, only unfortunately it turns my 25-minute commute easily into 45 minutes or more. Doesn’t excite me either, but for that reason hardly anyone looks for a new job.

Best regards,

Andreas

Have you listened to the traffic reports recently? Do you currently travel around Munich by public transport or by car?

What I’m getting at: there are now far too many people wanting to drive into Munich. If you have to travel during peak hours (in Munich roughly 7-9 and 16-18, in rural areas probably already from 7 am and earlier), you may in the future spend more time standing still than driving.
Nowadays it doesn’t even have to be because of an accident – just recently I was stuck “completely without reason” for about 30 minutes from the end of the A94 motorway to the Riem junction; it wasn’t a trade fair day (which you should factor in with significant traffic jams!) and there was no snowfall either.
Personally, I find it stressful and nerve-wracking to regularly crawl along a motorway at a maximum of 30 km/h.

According to a colleague who drives the A94 from Riem to Munich in the mornings, the slow-moving traffic there now starts before 7 am.

I therefore assume that this will get worse (has to get worse) in the coming years before maybe there will be a rethink. If I were you, I would seriously question whether the person who is supposed to/wants to reduce their working hours to be there for the children can spend 2-3 hours a day commuting and whether you want to regularly use the B12 until the A94 is completed (also congested; add to that many crazies who overtake in every unclear traffic situation).
Unfortunately, the situation looks similar on all other roads as well.

So also consider whether the train or S-Bahn is an alternative and how things like “sick child needs to be picked up” can be managed.

Depending on the project, I sometimes drive longer distances per trip, but I don't see that as wasted time. Nowadays, it's easy to schedule phone appointments while driving. If you don't have fixed appointments, you can organize or arrange a lot by phone and voice control, and it's totally relaxed, without someone in the office constantly needing something from you. If you stop by the drive-in bakery beforehand, you also have a cappuccino next to you.

Advantage: No wasted time and the drive flies by. From certain positions onwards, you are paid based on performance rather than time... and I can effectively make phone calls in the car, just like sitting at the computer... hands-free systems in decent vehicles have become very good.

Can you also effectively pay attention to traffic at the same time? Talking on the phone in the car, especially if it should be done effectively, is a danger.
