The open staircase will not look as nice as you hope. The style of the staircase is, of course, determined by the color and material and especially by the side balusters. Depending on how graceful, beautiful, or rustic they are crafted, the overall impression of the staircase varies.
I (because I have no children) completely left out the railing and only have a handrail on the wall and risers. It still looks better than the more expensive staircase with an ugly railing. The balusters there are so wide but without decorative elements that the staircase looks like a kindergarten one to the neighbors. Despite the open steps.
For an open staircase, I would definitely not sacrifice or plan less effectively the storage/useful space under the stairs in your house. The problem is already that there is very little space when entering. Why should you then give away the next best place for useful things just to be able to look under the stairs while going up?
