I’m throwing in another idea, where there is only 1 staircase for 2 residential units on the upper floor. The brother’s room and bathroom could be used by the family or guests when the brother isn’t there. But since the brother also needs to eat somewhere, he probably always sits at the parents’ table, so the 70 cm table and the 200 cm kitchen unit definitely won’t work. There would be significantly more space in the granny flat here:
Thanks "Würfel" for this drawing. It is very clear to see that when the staircase in the granny flat is removed, there is significantly more room in the living room (which some here have already mentioned several times). Unfortunately, it’s not an option for us that my brother lives with us when he is here. Our apartment is already quite full with 3 children and 2 adults, and having one more person in the house would increase the stress factor even more. However, my parents want the brother to live with them.
Speaking of my parents; they have been involved in the planning from the very beginning. Yes, it is true that they would have liked a somewhat larger living room, about 24m2, but they were satisfied with the final plan. We all would have preferred a bigger house, but unfortunately, the budget doesn’t allow for that. Family cohesion, as it is right now, is very important to my parents.
