Is a "Free TV" connection still worthwhile?

Sure. You need cables anyway. The investment is the dish plus LNB. On the other hand, TV via Telekom or VF costs an additional monthly fee. And with my phone contract, I'm not as free anymore. DSL through congstar then doesn’t work. SAT is really good to stay free. And if something goes wrong, you can fix it yourself. An LNB costs 25,- I always keep one in reserve. Replacing it is not a problem. Nothing else breaks there.

If you don't watch free TV often, you don't have to take the TV option with the internet provider. Almost every new TV offers a smart function. There are apps (e.g. Zattoo free) where you can stream the live channels. It may be that an advertisement is displayed when starting the app and the stream is not in HD, but for a few times a year it is sufficient.

The picture quality via satellite alone is no longer up to date. Today, devices with an average size of over 50" are sold. Naturally, one would like to watch in 4K if possible. And that is available on Netflix and others, but as far as I know, not via satellite.

The channels have their own, ad-free apps

We have a satellite socket in every room and two in the living room for the twin receiver. I’m not really an excessive user of FreeTV (except for Babystation and house-building series, which I love). But since our little one has taken an interest in the series on Kika, I bless my satellite dish every morning. Especially on weekends, when junior shows up at 6:30, I can let him watch TV without worries and turn over in bed for a while. In the evening, there’s Sandmännchen. Occasionally the Kika wish movie on Friday evenings. We used to pay 50 € for Entertain. I’m very glad that’s no longer necessary. Otherwise, Prime and YouTube are our best friends. I think Netflix will be moving in with us soon as well.

On the topic of "LAN connection everywhere," I would like to contribute that the newer WIFI standards have brought an incredible improvement. Fiber optic with 200MBit came into the house here, and I had proactively (because it’s an old building) laid a LAN cable from the ground floor to the upper floor.

Since I have a new laptop, the LAN port has remained unused. When 5GHz Wifi is used, I can stream several FullHDs effortlessly over the air instead of struggling with the cable.
