Why building a house almost always costs more than calculated

So a shower easily costs 1,000 euros more, with 2 you have 2,000 euros.

Glass partition instead of shower curtain x2 = 1,500 euros.

Electric roller shutters are also a thing, starting at 150 euros / piece, more like... with 10 windows 1,500 euros.

Different switch program... also just 2,500 euros more than standard.

Garage 9x3 instead of 6x3... 2,500 euros more.

This list can be continued indefinitely, but that was just quickly 10,000 euros in "extra wishes" and I'm not even close to what is possible.

We will hopefully be moved in by Sunday and are not more than 3% over the planned budget - but we have added a third shower bathroom, done much more electrical work than planned, installed underfloor heating everywhere, built a large concrete fireplace, an outrageously expensive mailbox plus a significantly more elaborate door system. In addition, the basement including garage is fully plastered and everything there is installed flush-mounted.

The roof was also done more elaborately.

So it is possible with own labor and friends/family - however, our construction period was over 13 months.

We have no more energy and today I am down sick for the first time - maybe because everything hits you at once.

You are right - only these costs for the shower can arise - regardless of whether it is a walk-in shower or one with a shower tray. In my opinion, the glass door is more likely to be used in the shower with shower tray, since with the walk-in shower, the partition wall is often just extended a bit. That’s what I meant - why was the walk-in shower cited as the cost driver.

But has already explained it: The walk-in shower is supposed to be an example of following the mainstream.

We recently looked at a shower.. it was around 18,000 EUR Yes, just the shower. Tile format 3m x 1.5m, thus completely without joints. Plus 3x rain ceiling panels at about 3.xxx EUR each. Crazy..

But we’re also treating ourselves to one rain ceiling panel. But only one.

I finalized my Excel with the latest numbers yesterday (it somehow got lost in the moving stress back then ). For the pure house construction (so without the outdoor area / garden), we are pretty much 2% over. The biggest cost driver here was the basement with [WU-Beton].
