"Theoretically" it is possible to build a bungalow on the plot. However, it would have to be so large that the neighbors would be too close to us and we would have to give up on square meters of living space. Furthermore, we have already signed a contract for a two-story townhouse and see more advantages in this house on this plot than in a bungalow. Regarding our age, we can still move into a bungalow or have one built in 20-25 years.

But you gave me a good idea. Perhaps this is what confuses some forum members, that in my posts it often sounds like we are only building for the next 15-20 years. Our new house will not be the final stop.

If that is the case, then attention must also be paid to the resale value, at least keeping in mind that your way of building is also interesting for a sufficiently large buyer group.

If I remember correctly, about 150 sqm was mentioned as bungalow-suitable living space... how big do you want to build at least? That seems more than enough to me... About the neighbors: I also don’t want anyone looking over my shoulder, but one or two corners should be possible, for that the much-cited plot sketch would finally have to be provided... or an angled bungalow with a cozy, sheltered terrace?

All the more reason to plan the house so that it is also attractive for later / other users.
But somehow it sounds like a stressful life, unless you are as building-addicted as some of us.

I should add that I have never built before... maybe I'll remove "...build..." from my active and passive vocabulary after moving into the new house if it gets too scary. But for now, I am optimistic.

I wish good health for that, which does not reduce the then available income through additional payments or private health insurance tariffs. Being slightly over 50 myself, I find the idea appealing to treat oneself to a change of scenery in twenty years (i.e., as long as one still responds positively to such). Because home ownership (in streets with a high proportion of owner-occupiers, which typically applies to new single-family house developments) unfortunately has the downside that the panoply of strange characters around you rarely gets reshuffled until petrification. And the same thing happens every day like Groundhog Day when you meet the same people forever while walking the dog.

Each of us can only hope for that. But I am confident and assume that downsizing spatially might possibly bring a small surplus.

And I find it appealing that you don’t consider us fundamentally too old for that.

I cannot assess whether that is the downside, but I think that people who grow old together in these new development areas can almost unconditionally trust each other. That is a high value and probably not so easy to replace.
