Dear TE,

you are definitely not the first to be shocked by the estimated costs. It was the same for us with every design. I also only wanted "standard." Classic 4-person bungalow, column entrance, podium bathtub (don’t ask me why), spacious bathroom with walk-in, angled shower, 2 accesses to the storage room, etc. The first general contractor laughed at me when I mentioned our budget. He laughed until he cried! It dawned on me then that my "standard" was far from reality. So we readjusted until we landed on our budget.
Note: I only got my walk-in (not angled) shower.

Nice post! It is indeed surprising how quickly supposed "small things" can push the price up into the five-figure range, which possibly years ago would have been in the four-figure range.

There was once a thread here about what builders have foregone, whether with a light or heavy heart. Unfortunately, I could not find the thread again using the "search"; but it would certainly be worth reviving it. :-) A certain imbalance would presumably consist in the fact that construction costs have risen so enormously and newer builders may have to make more sacrifices compared to older builders. A comparison in that regard would still be interesting ... and if older builders are happy, all the better. :-) One must, sincerely meant, also be able to grant and rejoice with others. :)

By the way, it also depends a bit on who the contracting party is: I paid a whopping 7,500 EUR for the addition of a walk-in shower in the second bathroom of my condo 6 (!) years ago. The calculation was actually over 10,000 EUR, but I was generously given a discount because the property developer was so nice. If I had simply told them to leave the drywall open on one side, I could probably have had it done for half or less. Unfortunately, that seems to be the norm today.

I was just about to say, if I remember correctly, the thread that had the biggest response was the one that focused more on where the money was spent. And not where one economized
