The head is not put in the sand. Information is being gathered so that one has arguments ready for the discussion.
We have never built anything before and there is a lack of experience on this topic at every turn.
My husband just read through everything and thanks you for the answers.
Now we know that it is too expensive. There must be a cost driver somewhere.
We are talking to the architect about it.

We were not asked about the budget and did not bring it up ourselves either.
As it came across, he first wanted to understand what we want to build.
After a rough draft, we found quite a few faults and with the second draft the right thing already came with a cost estimate.

Thank you all very much.

But this is not funny and not very helpful. Anyone can talk smart in the thread here - but no help was offered. I no longer expect any messages from the OP!

Going back to square one is always possible. Better to have wasted €10,000 on an architect than to have built too expensively for hundreds of thousands. But the situation isn't serious enough yet to make a hard cut. So, tomorrow just go to the architect, act clueless and ask very naively why his cost estimate differs so much from the usual €2,500/m²? The neighbors paid that a few months ago. The second question you definitely have to ask: What would need to be changed in the design to get down to €2,500/m²? Of course, he’ll say prices are especially high right now. Corona, shortage of building materials, whatever. It doesn't matter, but you have to find out why the construction is so expensive. Is it really the architect’s fault, or the design? Because anything over €3,000/m² I wouldn’t consider normal anymore. But whether you agree on €3,000 or more or less as a target is irrelevant for now. Start negotiating at €2,500/m² and only concede upward slowly.

Um.....You seem helpless and insecure but "you want to think about it" whether to accept the help currently offered here? I think the pressure to suffer is nowhere near its peak o_O

That changes exactly nothing!

Maybe just think about whether and where you’re being picky. I don’t care whether someone accepts help or not. But using the word "fraud" here and thus very likely pushing a newcomer away again is just stupid.
