Regardless of the fact that I would probably plan smaller with your lifestyle model, because the house will likely already be about 10 years old by the time it is actually used with child(ren):
Cut the basement, and the whole thing immediately looks much better.
A basement must be affordable without any ifs and buts.
What are you missing? Probably about 90% cluttered (not to say junked up in some cases ;) ) storage space with things you use once in a blue moon, if at all.
We've been living in a house without a basement since 2017. And the limited storage space not only regularly forces us to part with mostly now useless things.
It also successfully fights the consumption of such things, since you have to first think about the storage possibility... ;)
What I want to say with this:
If planned smartly above ground and sufficient storage space is provided, the only thing you might miss without a basement is the home cinema.
And even there I can now imagine something nicer than sitting down in the dark basement. I definitely prefer the cozy living room.
There is nothing against providing great sound and a screen there (motorized for movie nights and a good TV as well), or just doing that right away.
With the 100k saved by skipping the basement, a good projector really doesn’t matter much... ;)
That also makes the smart home topic more realistic. But given your tech affinity, I would recommend KNX rather than some wireless solution. ;)
