Dear everyone,

I'm jumping in here because I am also in the middle of network planning/implementation. My electrician wants to install 2x 8-port patch panels for me, although I would prefer a 24-port one. I have now suggested that I organize the network cabinet and the patch panel myself, so that he only has to connect the network cables. I had suggested a patch panel to him. His response about the patch panel was just "we use panels with modules, which can simply be mounted cable by cable."

Could someone please tell me the difference? I have no experience with this and am grateful for any support.

Best regards

With your switch from the link, the ports in the switch are permanently installed and the cables are then connected to the ports. The electrician wants a patch panel where the individual ports are basically removable modules from the housing. Then the ports are terminated onto the cable and pushed into the housing from the back. It's just much easier to wire and you have the advantage that you can move the individual ports around flexibly inside the housing if needed. Your electrician's statement definitely makes sense.

Thank you very much for the quick response and simple explanation. Now I also understand the electrician with his and your reasoning. Could you recommend a module to me?

Best regards

I would simply have the electrician offer you one. The question would be why he offers you 2x8-port instead of your desired 24-port. Maybe he just wants to mount a 10" cabinet for you instead of a 19"?

For the current planning, I need 15 ports and I said right away that 24 would certainly be better (for the future etc.). He would do it too, but he didn’t seem to be very convinced by my idea. Regarding the cabinet, he only said that you can of course do something like that if you had 24 ports. He doesn’t really share my enthusiasm :D
