How long have you been saving equity for your house?

I don’t understand that .. ??!? You save 2300 but don’t want to pay a 2000 rate? Your 2300 will be worth how much in 7-9 years, adjusted for inflation and construction cost increases? The 7-9 years would be added to your loan term if you started to pay off already. Then you probably don’t need 2K anymore but only the more “gained” time (and live longer in the house for that)? Besides, you are probably (crystal ball) right that you can’t save against the rise in construction costs. But that can of course also change.

Saved for about 6 years and were then able to contribute just under 300k. Unfortunately, there were no significant financial boosts from family.

I invest in ETFs so that I actually benefit from it and don’t just leave it sitting in the overnight money account. What’s wrong with saving 200k from a 600k construction sum? To get a good loan. Besides, it will take a while anyway until we find/get a suitable plot in the village. So I’m not stressed about that.

It's also a question of how much you can really save. If you currently save €1000 per month, construction prices will simply get away from you completely. Even with €2000 per month, you have hardly been able to keep up with the price increases in recent years. If the income is right and you have a fixed common goal, then better to do it now than to wait.

We saved for about 3-4 years, but it was more or less only for the additional costs and interior fittings. We financed 95%.

Looking back, I could now, in my early 50s, construct a great story, because it has succeeded - we never planned so far ahead, as life surprised us too often with changes - setbacks as well as opportunities. That we now live in our own self-designed and built house was long not foreseeable, although I carried that wish within me already as a teenager.

Apparently, we are rather the exception here. We both saved a lot from the very beginning and consumed almost nothing. This way, we have been able to save over 200k by the age of almost 30. However, this still isn’t enough for much luxury in our case, as the area is too expensive and our income is relatively low. We definitely would never have been able to finance 700k, and without our ironclad frugality, we certainly wouldn’t have stood a chance.
