I confess: I am not only not a fan, but an enemy of access paths between cars. It’s not just about the mail and parcel couriers who have to squeeze between vehicles, but also about the residents themselves when they don’t use a car.

An apartment without a terrace… how old is the mother-in-law? Does she pay for the basement, and in return, she gets a dark hole in the basement without a terrace, but has to accept quite a long walk around the house? Almost no daylight gets in through the apartment window due to its location. And what does come in doesn’t reach the middle of the room.
In the south, a basement apartment is better located.
The idea of access on the west side basically takes away your entire west garden. You barely have a meter left to be able to walk around the house there.
You should consider how you want to walk around, use, maintain, and access your outdoor areas. I see no practicality for everyday use there.

I also find the technical room location quite illogical: why take the long line if you could use the front corner of the house for the technical room? Spontaneously, I would place both the technical room and the apartment at the front. Do you know what the planner was thinking that you have to take an eternally long path around the house for the apartment?

We are also not fans of this corridor between cars, but unfortunately, we have found no other option (street on the south side, entrance on the east).

The apartment in the south is not possible because our garden is on the south side. We wanted a larger, contiguous garden. This only worked on the south side because we did not want a north garden or a narrow strip on the west side.

That must be quite an evil mother-in-law to park as a basement child in a catacomb with access through the light well. The architect seems to have an overall preference for hose rooms - at least not much residential architecture in mind. I currently lack the time to search for the thread, but we once had a case here where the OP had to share the planner of a multi-storey apartment building because the developer, in addition to one or more apartment buildings, also built, if I remember correctly, a single and a semi-detached house. I don't really find anything *sexy* here.

I can only agree with the question. Where does the long pause actually come from: did you have little time, or did the planner take ages for this stroke of genius?

The long pause was due to the decision to build with a granny flat after all. And the architect was not the fastest.

Thanks for the hint about the shed. We already have that on the list for the next meeting. The budget has increased from 700k to 1 million including incidental costs and outdoor facilities. And you can never have enough storage space, can you?

I would quickly get a walker and claim the room on the ground floor, whoever wants to move into the basement can do so, but not me as the mother-in-law.

Now the house has grown, a story has been added, a pantry, a utility room, a freezer and a storage room in the basement, and mom is next to the storage room. If only the house had become smaller now so that you could have some of the 450 sqm. If one were spiteful, one would say that you don’t grant mom the entire length of the house because the windows would not meet the DIN standards. Hence the strange shape of the storage room. But if this is your wish, what is shown here, then so be it. However, I can’t see any logical implementation here. It can’t be that the poorly planned and quite inadequate granny flat is justified by the fact that the resident spends a lot of time elsewhere and doesn’t spend time at home. Then just give up the small office on the ground floor, that is at least accessible. Your number of people has now increased from 3 to 4... so you have to plan differently and resort to plan B. But here I see only bigger, more, and additionally a half-hearted flat in the basement. It’s not really a basement apartment. Currently, one can only say that a hole has been dug in the basement so that the apartment gets one or two daylight windows and so that living spaces can be created there. An apartment consists of living spaces, but living spaces are not automatically granny flats.

Sigh, see above. If I were the mother-in-law, I wouldn’t dare to invite anyone home. I find the apartment shameful. No matter how old/young one is, it just doesn’t fit. The only nice thing is the size, that is well done. Then at least make a nice sitting terrace out of the west area and keep the entrance via the stairs from the main apartment.
