Exactly - that’s why we decided on a basement. But there were several reasons right away: a) the available ground area of the house (with 84m² not exactly huge, but if the development plan doesn’t allow more, there’s no point in arguing), b) terrain – this way we could raise the house slightly above the surrounding ground without effort – we liked that better, c) I don’t like to keep my ski and bike workshop as well as winter sports equipment storage in the garage, d) I’m not a fan of large garden sheds – the garden isn’t big anyway, e) all the building services could go into the basement, on the ground floor it would simply have taken up too much space. And of course – there’s still a lot of stuff standing around in the basement, which is being sorted out bit by bit, so upstairs everything is still quite airy and manageable...

Regards I.

I don't need to sugarcoat anything, I am fully convinced of it, and I'm happy that so much money is freed up for more [Lusux]/ a nicer garden. But whoever thinks they need one should build it and that's that.

Or you can simply afford a basement AND still have enough luxury for knick-knacks
To each their own!

You can talk yourself into anything – even an unnecessary basement

To me, this arguing for basements sounds very suspiciously like defending a decision for a basement

As you can see, it works both ways. Whether or not to have a basement is quite an individual decision. With today's utilities and technology, a basement is no longer as important as it was 30–50 years ago. Some simply want the extra space, which is relatively more economical with a basement than building a bigger house. Especially when the ground already has to be dug out to a considerable depth.

I myself do not miss it, even though I previously lived in a fully basemented house with over 100 m² of basement and 6 rooms. The washing machine and dryer are located on the ground floor in the utility room. However, I have also planned a small storage room in the upper floor where these will probably be moved soon to shorten the distances. I keep drinks in the utility room. Food and supplies are completely stored in the rather large kitchen. This also keeps the distances short here. Other stuff like seasonal items (Christmas clutter) is stored in the attic. Heating and ventilation require so little space that in the 8 m² utility room there is also room for recycling glass, paper, drinks, washing machine, dryer, and stroller. My workshop is in the annex (21 m²) behind the carport. I also didn’t have it in the basement in times when I had one—not only because of dirt, but occasionally I handled larger items there. I didn’t want to carry them up and down stairs all the time. Right now, garden furniture is still stored in the workshop during winter along with bicycles, but once the terrace roof is finished, these will stay on the terrace even in winter.

For my friend, on the other hand, the basement is essential. He has his office, sauna room, home theater room, and a storage room there ^^

Certainly, cost is a factor with a basement as well. A basement would have cost me > 40K. For that, I get many other nice things and don’t have to restrict myself now. At the moment, I also don’t know what I would store there?

Don't brag so much. Even the well-off have a limited budget.

Living space - I notice that most people really think that the room is supposed to become a storage room.

I am also very happy about a 12 sqm large technical room with a washing machine and dryer. And still having a utility room on the ground floor that doesn’t have to take in laundry, etc.

I suspect (!!) that nowadays a living basement is built rather than a utility basement – at least in the extended circle of acquaintances.
