In principle, I would definitely recommend you to only finalize the financing of the project once you have definitely secured a permanent employment contract and are out of the probation period. Use the time before that to gather information, inquire at banks, etc. But if I were you, I would definitely not get stuck in anything!

Of course. But without a permanent employment contract, financing won't work anyway. However, I wouldn't do it like that in any case.

How does it actually work with unemployment benefits (ALG1) when you change employers? So let's assume I have a permanent contract with an employer and have been there for years. If they fire me, I am entitled to ALG1 for one year before worse things happen, right? Now, if I voluntarily change employers and enter a new employment with a probationary period, and then the new employer fires me after 2 months of probation – would I still be entitled to ALG1 or would that be just bad luck?

The entitlement also applies in the case of a change of employer and termination during the probationary period.

He does! The double use again. Not only are you planning your 20,000 for kitchen and so on, as well as covering half the salary, now overtime is mentioned, which reduces your free time without the possibility of accumulating it. That may be nice for petty cash, so the mailbox etc. can be paid, but it will restrict you. I built turnkey with my husband, that is with a general contractor: there were ongoing overtime hours plus 4 weeks of vacation just for painting and flooring work. I definitely used about 120 overtime hours during the ongoing construction to "go there and clarify this and that with the craftsmen," and that from my regular day job. That was stressful. And luckily, I had a sympathetic team leader. I don’t want to talk the whole thing down – with 140sqm it works … maybe. An 8% slope also costs a lot of gravel and supports with L-shaped stones. That is not considered in the costs at all. By the way, we have some floor plan discussions here that refer to the slope and the living level in the basement. Maybe you should take a look there?!

I will definitely take a look at that. I need to see if it would be feasible cost-wise.
If by eliminating the top floor and relocating those rooms to the basement you could save maybe €50,000 – just throwing that out there – that would already be a small step forward…
