You really don’t have any other choice. At least this way you can distract yourself a bit :D

Actually, today the nice general contractor called again and said that with the new basement height and the price increases, it would only be 5000€ more for the shell including the roof, and that we should reconsider. And that we would have so many costs if we cancel because the input plans are already made and the ceiling has been ordered..

It would tempt me again, especially since you don't need a new cellar height, but from (also romantic) experience I know that such on-off relationships rarely lead to anything good.

There are still exceptions. Three weeks ago, I commissioned the construction of a patio roof. Negotiated further by phone, agreed on, scheduled an appointment, and completed on the agreed date two days ago. The good man did not see a single signature from me nor receive a single euro in advance. After completion, I received the invoice with the comment: "No problem, just transfer it sometime when you get around to it." I keep having similar experiences, even if maybe not in these cost dimensions... Nevertheless, there are such people, you just have to believe in it and approach people accordingly :)

That sounds great! Just that something like this still exists.

So the general contractor ordered ceilings for the construction project even though supposedly no contract was in place yet? This is getting wilder and wilder...:(

Yes, that also sets off alarm bells for me in case of doubt. ... how is your separation from the general contractor established? I would probably have this process reviewed by a lawyer by now at the latest, to ensure that your separation from the general contractor remains valid.
