Maybe you want to go through each wall once more to see if a window can still be installed there. Without any reservations at first, kind of like brainstorming. Involve your children as well. Even if they are still small, they might point with their finger to something you have previously excluded but haven’t really thought through yet. Maybe you can also make some of the windows bigger. Basically, I think your house can have more windows, although I am an absolute window fan. In our own house, we would also have floor-to-ceiling windows facing the street (we don’t have a sidewalk in front of our house), if my husband hadn’t vetoed it.
Otherwise, I think you can compensate a lot with furnishing and good lighting. There are good free consulting tools on the internet and also professional consultants.
One idea would be to mount the TV on the ceiling, between the dining area and the living area (possibly rotatable), and for that purpose add a window in that wall. In my view, the TV could also be mounted on the wall facing the staircase.
If it is possible for you, mentally go through all your cabinets again to see if instead of the usual room-high cabinets etc., you can fit more into dressers. Then you will have more space for windows. From my subjective point of view, that’s nicer anyway.
And quite generally, I think, if the ground floor does not suit you personally, you can always add a quarter-, half-, or three-quarter-high drywall, glass wall, large art object, or similar somewhere. Exactly how it should be, you will notice anyway only once you live in it. ;-)
