Sure, if you also connect your washing machine and coffee machine, then naturally many more devices run over Wi-Fi. It also always depends on your own needs. For us, 75% of the devices would be stationary and therefore wired (2x PC, 1x printer, 2x TV/FireTV, 1x stereo receiver, 1x NAS, ...). On Wi-Fi, if it weren’t for the poor LAN situation in the apartment, we would only have two smartphones and one tablet.

As I said, we currently live in a Wi-Fi house. It’s okay, but I would still plan for LAN sockets where possible. In my eyes, Wi-Fi is not a luxury; rather, it’s the LAN sockets that are.

Another factor: with every device connected to the Wifi, a fundamental security risk is added. A Wifi can easily be attacked from outside while a LAN, as always, requires physical access. Not without reason, in larger companies Wifi and LAN are two separate networks and Wifi is only provided for Internet access for guests.

I think you’re right, it’s also an individual thing: all stationary PCs have long been mothballed here. Everyone just uses a notebook or tablet or smartphone around here. I would also want to connect a decent printer in the household to LAN, as well as the TVs in the obvious spots. NAS would go directly into the technical room, so it wouldn’t be a socket in any room...

I consider the argument irrelevant for the single-family house where no 007 lives. Business is a completely different matter. Even there, many companies often prefer remote wifi work.

One argument for LAN sockets might be that you can definitely turn off Wi-Fi at night while sleeping, while stationary devices can continue running to, for example, record something on the TV, perform an update, ...
