Why no roof overhang? Would be afraid that the facade would get dirty too quickly.

Sorry, I still owed the answer regarding the gable roof on a square here – probably because I had already checked off the square for myself: the simple reason for this is the perspective distortion, which regularly causes misjudgments in slopes (of roofs, as well as gradients of plots). With square floor plans – which actually don’t have a clear "length" axis – the eaves side appears shorter with a gable roof, and it seems as if the ridge axis is rotated at a right angle to the house axis.

Basically, there is nothing wrong with a square floor plan if it simply "results" from the design – you just shouldn’t put the square shape into the specification sheet from the start. Because then it tends to indulge in the favorite pastime of corsets: it pinches. In your latest draft, this is most clearly visible in the squashed children's rooms.

However, I have already given positive instructions for floor plan creation here several times, for example here: and here:

I also considered doing this for facade protection. This was also the opinion of the generation of my father and father-in-law. I understand that too. It is purely for optical reasons. For that, a clinker brick that is correspondingly hard and does not crumble like some Dutch bricks when drilling with a tape measure.

And where do you think the dilemma is?
So, apart from the opinions that eaves overhang is important for facade protection, etc.?
And define no eaves overhang?
Strictly with internal drainage or eaves overhang = gutter?

Hi 11ant,

hopefully your notification display doesn't burst from all the likes I'm giving in another thread.

You are of course right. The kids' rooms are a bit cramped, but I'm cool with that. They face south, which is very important to me. The kids will spend a lot of time there. The square meter number fits for me, I don't know it any other way.

So I would see this as a compromise and accept that it is like this. There is no perfect floor plan, but a decent one with which you can already imagine living. This is almost given here, if you tinker a bit with the windows.

Edit: the funny thing is: after we shelved our first (oversized and rightly completely torn apart) draft, we started differently: which rooms do we want in which size? Where are we often, where less so? From that came a squaring. The client didn’t like that so much, she wanted a Lego brick after all. But since everything is included, we are still at 10.5x10.5.

: "Krux" is the wrong word, more like a challenge. For aesthetic reasons, we thought of a roof without an overhang. Overhang = gutter. Gutter not recessed (is that the correct term?). But the attentive reader knows that I am willing to learn. Sometimes more, sometimes less. At the end of the project, however, everyone is invited for a beer.
