Retro or not. It depends on the application. Sliding doors make sense where you don't have the swing area and want a large opening. For constantly opening and closing, they are of course nonsense.

The dangling lamps are making a comeback as much as the loft look with lift-and-slide doors dies out. But the fact also is that in many development plans, an increase in the number of floors must first be possible. With two full floors, we could no longer build higher. Eaves height is 6m, ridge height 9.3m. Whether the usual increase of 20cm to 2.7m makes a whopping 8% difference is something I also dare to doubt.

An alternative to "large opening" with little space are folding systems. We have installed some from Solarlux and placed the folding area on the outside. This results in zero space requirement inside the room and the opening is significantly larger than with a sliding door. Short-haired collie puppy Evi is sleeping by the open window. Frame and four folding elements (pushed to the left in the picture) take up about 50cm of the total window opening (just under 4m).

That looks really great. Do you have a roller shutter/blind on it? How long have you had the door? I have occasionally read concerns about wear and tear.

May I ask if you then have no insects coming in or if they don’t bother you? When we only briefly have the large sliding door open in spring without pulling the fly screen, I can start setting up a new Krefeld study in the living room.

No roller shutters, no venetian blinds - for that, the folding mechanism would have to be placed inward (which is also common). The roof overhang is designed so that at the highest sun position, the sun does not come through the window and in winter the sun enters the entire room. The location of the house is such that you need binoculars from the other side of the valley or the viaduct to look inside. So privacy and shade management are taken care of. We have two of them in our living area and they are almost continuously open in summer - inside and outside are then hardly distinguishable. We are in the 6th problem-free year and the doors operate smoothly. When the terrace wood warped a bit, we had to intervene because we have no threshold to the outside. But that had nothing to do with the windows.

Of course insects do bother me sometimes. Mosquitoes like me, my wife is safe in that regard. I do not strive to enjoy all advantages at the same time. A few clear priorities are enough, and decisions aligned effectively with them. Absence of insects is not even on my life priority list. Being able to live both indoors and outdoors in summer, on the other hand, is. A fly screen would disturb this priority, so there isn’t one.
