At night you perceive sounds much more intensely anyway, because it's quiet outside. No constant background noise – even nature itself is quite loud during the day, which you only really notice at night. How about a decentralized fan in the bedroom? Then you’ll never have to open the window again.

I have special sleep headphones that are designed to mask surrounding noise with monotone sounds. The brain focuses on the sound from the headphones (for me, a certain white noise is most effective) so that the noise from the environment is no longer perceived. This is not hocus-pocus, but the reviews on the internet are mixed. You have to commit to it, try out what suits you best ([Meeresrauschen] doesn't work for me at all), and have some patience. For testing – if you don't disturb anyone else in the bedroom – there are also mobile apps that specialize in producing such sounds.

That sounds like psychosomatic symptoms—definitely get it checked.

From the beginning...
The decision to buy the house was the best possible decision at the time. Period. A trip into the past only triggers a spiral of thoughts and you get lost in the problem.

Mindfulness exercises or fall-asleep music, for example on Apple Music, could help you. Earplugs could also be helpful. When we are tired from insufficient sleep, we can react very moody and irritable.

I am also very sensitive to noise. When I first bought my house, I couldn’t and didn’t pay attention to it during the viewings. The granite floors knocked me out at first. Since I came from an apartment in the city, the first nights were wonderful. Until I could hear the neighbors, the dog, the slamming door, the up and down on the stairs, and even voices faint but noticeable. The peak was when I heard the manual shutters next door at night and then it was over for me.

I slept poorly and was distracted. And I looked for solutions... preventively, I had test stays and interested parties just ran a music system next door to test how loud it was next door.

Solutions were separation with diamond wire around 35,000 euros, insulating panels to reduce noise.

Maybe it helps to distance yourself from the house and the issue for a few weeks if possible, and then decide.

Maybe you can find the good sides of the house in the meantime.

I find the many tips great. Thanks for that! Especially the thing about White Noise is true. It’s running here in the evening anyway for the child and also helps me. I have to say though, I’m not buying a house to make it bearable with aids. That was okay back in my student days when there was really no other way. So for the time I “have to” spend here, I will use that, but it is really objectively loud here. I will make use of therapeutic help to fundamentally find out where I want to be in life and symbolically also where I want to live … (here it’s not). And then when I know that, we have to look again … but for that we also need liquid funds again … it’s simply a fact that we currently can’t just quickly buy something. Maybe the market will relax again more in the next 1-2 years. Thanks to everyone!

Hi,

we have a similar buying story: we bought a house located on one of our two absolute favorite streets - but on the side where the terrace is only about ~80m away from a busy city street. During the viewings, we even went all the way to the property boundary (even closer to the street) and listened there, and it was absolutely unobtrusive. I think that was because the viewings took place on Sunday mornings - which is currently the quietest time by far here.

Now we have just over 40db of traffic noise on the terrace. When a motorcycle/bus/truck passes by, sometimes it’s around 48 or so. I find that very loud, my wife not at all. Currently, our terrace and the house wall are still completely bare and I also believe that many sound reflections contribute to this. We’re now going to see how it changes if we plant some greenery on the terrace and use sun protection, furniture, etc. to reduce the reflections somewhat.

Otherwise, after half a year here, for example, I can easily read outside without having to focus on the noise level. And what’s very important: I repeatedly notice, when I’m in supposedly quiet areas, how much you actually hear there.

Added to that is the fact that the location was precisely why we chose the house. For example, I enjoy every day being able to walk/hike in the nature reserve 200m away, being at the swimming pool and sports center in 3 minutes by bike, the kids will be able to get there quickly on foot/to school by bike their whole school life, the bus stop is 150m away in bad weather, and I can quickly get to the ICE train station (<10 min by bike) which I need for work. These framework conditions hardly exist at all in truly quiet places, so I accept the street noise. We are also really lucky with the neighbors – apart from lawn mowers and the street, we hardly hear anything else.

One more idea: for us, the street on the other side of the house is VERY quiet. Would it be an option for you to set up an outdoor seating area there?

Hello,

that is really VERY similar!
And honestly, it does me good to read about your development.

Our neighborhood is also very quiet so far + 30 km/h zone and a dead-end street. Maybe 10-15 cars pass the house during the day. It is only the droning noise of the highway that makes it loud here. So that’s another parallel. The front door is on the side away from the highway. There is a bench there that I like to use sometimes.

Have you or did you ever consider selling or reorienting yourselves again?
