Hey, I would also like to share my story here. Maybe it will help you too. We moved into our house without exterior plaster. On the very first day, I noticed in our bathroom that you could clearly hear the people talking outside. Instinctively, I immediately knew that something was wrong with the house. The whole family tried to convince me that I was crazy because they all already knew that I am very sensitive to noise. Five years later, after four years of legal disputes and a new roof, I finally have peace and confirmation that I am not crazy. Our biggest problem was that we could hear airplanes that took off from the airport 100 km away and then flew about 5,000 meters above our house in our bedroom. Nobody wanted to believe us, and everyone thought we were crazy. But it was true. Apparently, the airplane engines produced a certain frequency in the roof, which was then greatly amplified by vibrations, so that we could hear the planes already 5 minutes before they arrived over our house and 5 minutes afterwards as well.
In the last two weeks, we tore off the entire roof and replaced it, and now there is finally peace.
I had the problem that I already knew the flight schedule of Munich airport by heart, even though it is 100 km away, and I paid attention to every plane, which drove me insane. Only after we won the legal dispute and I knew the roof would be taken off, could I mentally accept the noises. Before that, they just drove me crazy and annoyed me internally. Often, I asked myself what I had done wrong and blamed myself.
It brings you to the edge of madness.
From my experience, I can only give you the tip that there are many technical and furnishing measures to reduce noise. I informed myself in this forum about how to make acoustic panels, and we hung them in our stairwell. We also have curtains on the windows and a carpet under the bed. That also helped a lot.
The most helpful for me was the installation of soundproof windows. We only had to replace the glass. That helped so much, and for four very large windows we paid about 3000 €. I can only give you the tip to have one installed in a quiet room, for example in the bedroom, and then test if it helps you. It will cost you about 500 €. For us, it was worlds apart, so we retrofitted all the windows step by step.
Of course, all these measures could not prevent the noises from entering our living space. But they reduced the noises and made it possible for me to develop over the last five years from "I don’t enter the upper floor and don’t furnish it either" to "I can tolerate it here reasonably well most days."
If you need tips regarding the windows, just get in touch. I can tell you exactly which ones they are.
