How much did the 3 garages cost fully assembled?

I'm strict about this—they will get a normal single bed. If they want a bigger one, they have to sort things out. If the room feels too full to them, they have to sort things out. Bulky items will then either go on the cupboard or into the garage/into the attic. Our paintball stuff will be stored there too. They only get a sofa in the room if they give up the bed for it. They can play with friends outside. In bad weather, they can expand into the hallway. Otherwise, it's the living room. If they don't like that, they have to play at friends' houses, who hopefully then have a bigger room.

I see it similarly. I had a 15 m² room (okay, until I was 9, I shared 10m² with my sister) and was very happy with that. Still, there was no unused space and I never had a bed wider than 1m in it. Today children already have a 1.4m bed at the age of 10. That already takes up the first 3m² for the bed. Then add a desk and a wardrobe, and the next 2.5m² are already missing. A sofa definitely no longer fits here, and if the child should ever play an instrument, it would also be borderline. But everyone has a different approach/lifestyle and there is no better or worse. One should just think carefully beforehand. I have 2 siblings and get along great with them. However, there probably would have been some hurt feelings now and then if we had had to play together in the same room.

Ok, that’s one way to do it, I find it a bit selfish, if the house would allow it in terms of overall size, but I wouldn’t give up a 5m² living room...

It's also a mystery to me personally why people prioritize so differently and bring arguments like "it used to be like this before."

In the past, bathrooms were also 5sqm, that worked too. In the past, kitchens were also 6sqm, that worked too. In the past, there were also ....

Children's rooms should be among the most important rooms in a house. Sure, little ones also like to play in the living room, etc., but using that as a justification to build a 50sqm living room, a 20sqm bedroom and only a 10sqm children's room, well. And on top of that, the worst location in the house. Bedroom nice facing the garden, children to the back -> in my opinion, no longer up to date.

If you cannot afford to build as large as you want, that's perfectly fine. But dedicating the "extra space" exclusively to the living room and bedroom is not for me.

Yes, I am selfish there. I am building the house for myself and my husband. The children will be out in at most 20 years. Then I have big rooms there that I don't need in that size.

@Tego: our bedroom is 12 sqm. So it's just a fraction bigger than one of the children's rooms. Besides, we will often be in the garden in the evenings. I want to be able to talk normally there without having to whisper because otherwise the children can't sleep. And bad location? Both look out onto the forest. It could have been worse for them.
And everyone prioritizes the importance of their rooms themselves. We almost only stay in the bedrooms and children's rooms for sleeping. The children are almost only in the living room.
We planned the house the way we need it. Not how others would like it.
