In our village, about every 10th plot is undeveloped. Although we come from here, it took us years to get one. New plots are hardly developed because "there are still plenty of undeveloped ones." My wife spent weeks finding out the owners of such plots from neighbors. Otherwise, you can't get the names. And who would willingly reveal that if they have been living comfortably next to a meadow until now? Whenever my wife had contact with the owners, the answer was always the same. "It's for grandchildren/children/nephews." In my opinion, undeveloped plots can't be expensive enough in annual costs. With the change in property tax, some plots were eventually sold here and there. Of course, well above the official 500€/sqm, but at least it was possible to buy something. It seems to make a difference whether you simply reserve a plot for your family and don't sell it, or whether you actively have to pay a few hundred euros every three months.

Regarding the extension: The person who suddenly has shade all year round might see it differently, although it might even be good against climate warming.

Housing shortage and rental distress are some of the major problems of our time. In this respect, we cannot avoid increasing density.
However, I also think that combating speculative vacancy, unauthorized holiday apartments, and other grievances could lead to success much faster. But one can do one thing and not neglect the other.
I would also be in favor of a home office obligation for activities where this is possible, so that employees can move to regions that are under less pressure. This could also revive deserted villages and possibly rejuvenate and socialize the population there.

Exactly what I meant, thanks. We were also able to buy such a plot years ago. But only with connections and plenty of discussions.

By the way, my post was not about "paving over the last green spaces," but about densification. I think it is clear that this is much more environmentally friendly than creating the next new housing development from scratch,

Welcome to socialism, where the state dictates and regulates everything from waking up to going to sleep. It didn’t work twice in Germany, and I wonder where the assumption comes from that a third time would be more successful.

Home office is something for the upper middle class, who can easily set up a dedicated office room in their house.
Average Joe in a three-room apartment with two kids then sits at the kitchen table?

Apart from that... we are going back to two in-office days per week because the colleagues who are not in field service are wasting away at home, and the conversations at the coffee machine or over the desk are massively missed... when everyone is doing their own thing and no one knows about the others, that is partly very unproductive...

I always wonder that too, but I have given up trying to understand the Germans. Although the state could help, for example by no longer paying for housing for social welfare recipients in regions with a tight housing market. Those who don’t work anyway can also live where there is no work...

I meant it the way it was already done with Corona or part-time work. Mandatory for the company (above a certain size), voluntary for the employees.

The other has anecdotal evidence below bar-talk level (why actually twice? Just because something is written on it doesn't mean it's actually inside, see A.H. was a communist narrative) and Teimo's contribution reveals a repulsive view of humanity, which has fortunately been outdated for a few decades now.
