So, the plan is as follows:
- Bathrooms will possibly be renewed, just the installations (shower, bathtub, 2x toilets). We won't cover the costs for this, as it apparently falls under necessary maintenance and will be done "by the landlord" (even though it's within the family), since we pay a small rent there. The appearance is secondary for now. I might take care of that with tile paint and PVC flooring once I’ve moved in and still find it terrible when clean.
- For the kitchen, we will build a mix. We’ll buy cabinets and a sink from Ikea, as well as an oven, stove, and dishwasher. An L-shaped setup without wall cabinets. Separately, we will buy a range hood (the ones at IKEA are too expensive for me), and a side-by-side fridge that we will take with us to the new house later. I originally wanted to replace the floor in the kitchen – it has ugly, old PVC with visible wear and tear from the years. I decided to keep it for cost reasons and try a color from Miss Pompadour. Hopefully, that will be enough for 1.5 years. Also, we will replace a horrible wooden photo wallpaper with simple fleece wallpaper.
- The carpets in the two large rooms really have to go; even my mother has come around to the opinion that as little money as possible should be invested there. That’s about 65m², and we’re now planning to lay cheap laminate on it. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but definitely better and more hygienic than the carpets neglected for 40 years. Vinyl was dropped because vinyl is simply more expensive than laminate, for whatever reason.
The other rooms have PVC or tiles on the floors, which I can live with. Some have textured plaster instead of wallpaper, which actually looks quite nice. Many rooms have old-fashioned wallpaper. I will take a closer look at that during the floor renovation work. If there are any that are unbearable, I will buy 1–2 buckets of paint and go back for Pentecost to paint again.
