To be honest, I wouldn't invest a single cent in the aesthetics. In the end, it's just tinkering and ends up looking even worse, with the contrast highlighted even more. Often in the past, high-quality and functional construction was done, I would keep that and not invest money in "cheap" solutions for aesthetic reasons.

Just ask the kitchen dealer of your choice if they will give you an old kitchen for free if you buy the new one from them in 1 year. Kitchen dealers also pick up used kitchens from customers, from which something can sometimes still be cobbled together. You could already buy the appliances new today.

It’s great, we also have the big brother of that here in the main bathroom (of course it doesn’t move with us). That really is a top idea. I think I would also feel much more comfortable right away if there was a fresh washbasin in there.

That’s exactly it. With 2 months I would bite the bullet, but a year – in that time you want to live and be happy as well. We will try to get the best out of it here with minimal investment. At least painting the walls just has to happen. Someone demented lived here before. They didn’t ventilate, it smells like pee & co everywhere, it’s already below bearable as it is. What we’re doing is the bare minimum to not feel disgusted. We’re trying to clean the carpets with a professional wet vacuum. An ozone device will also be needed. We will wallpaper part of the walls in the new kitchen with fleece wallpaper and paint the rest white. I think we’ll at least paint the rest of the house too but leave the wallpapers on.

The house is from the 70s and was lived in by a lifelong bachelor. Nothing was EVER done there. We are not going to spend four digits in expenses now, but I also can't be disgusted for a whole year.

Bathroom: Paint tiles, it doesn’t have to be so neat, it will last for a year. Leave the floor as is. Cheap toilet and washbasin, possibly the one suggested from Ikea, which will later go into the guest bathroom.

Kitchen: Either classified ads – but that will be a lot of work. Or cheap Metod cabinets without much fuss and with few (expensive) drawers, which will later be used in the basement/laundry room/pantry etc. Appliances either new and take along or cheap ones from classified ads. Assemble the cheapest countertop at Ikea.

One should not feel disgusted. But always be clear that it is a temporary solution and only the appearance can be disregarded. How far along are you with a new property? How is it with peace and quiet in the new accommodation?
