I would simply install an inexpensive sink. You can get them for 60 euros or less. Or a simple sink with a cabinet from Ikea, which can then also be used in the next house, e.g. in the guest bathroom.

We also need a kitchen / kitchenette for upstairs. I'm currently looking for DIY ideas or used ones on classifieds. Alternatively, we could also spend the 4 thousand euros to get one from IKEA. We are torn. On the one hand, it feels like a waste of money because of 1-1.5 years. On the other hand, we cook daily and dealing with the worst makeshift stuff during that time is not so cool either. If it were only 2 months, sure, but over a year is quite a bit of lifetime.

You can also create workspace and storage with a small budget or existing items, there are 100 systems at IKEA and with a bit of creativity you can make it nice. The problem is, however, that we need appliances.
A refrigerator (a freestanding fridge would be possible), a cooktop and extractor, and a sink are the minimum.

Something like this model. It's already available for 229 euros complete. We have a 10-year-old previous model, which has moved with us twice and still looks great. And we are a household with two children and three vandals. :) That was the best purchase of a makeshift solution in our household.

I could recommend Misspompadour to you. They also offer good advice on this and many examples of painted bathrooms (and more). For the paint, you should use eggshell quality, they are more durable.

Instructions e.g. on the aforementioned site supplemented by /r/Fliesen-streichen-mit-kreidefarbe

nothing lasts as long as a provisional solution

a year too long to do nothing and too short to accomplish much.
Think about what you can take from the new things again, like the suggestion with the sink.
Shelves usually always work.
Maybe with a few buckets of paint, some plants, and your furniture it already looks much friendlier.

You could buy the appliances new and then have them installed later in the new kitchen, as long as that’s compatible with the connections, etc. A freestanding refrigerator can surely be found on classifieds; you could later continue to use it in the kitchen or as a second appliance.
