We will also have an open kitchen in the new house. I do have certain concerns regarding smell (we only have [Umluft]). I have no worries about order (we are very tidy), cleanliness, or noises from the dishwasher, etc.

I was at the birthday party of a 5-year-old yesterday. In the household, besides the parents, live the 5-year-old and the 1-year-old. Both like running around the wall, the hallway, and kitchen/living area and fight each other. The "older one" enjoys being able to walk from the sofa to the kitchen, all visible to the parents. Everyone can communicate with each other. But what I really wanted to write: the children's and baby stuff is neatly organized in the kitchen and not cluttered. The kitchen gives a tidy impression despite "a lot of stuff" and many activities. Maybe it simply depends on one's own expectations of how one uses the kitchen, not needs it.
Everyone has to decide that for themselves.

There was also something about noise from the appliances: nowadays there are appliances that are whisper-quiet. And thus every conversation is louder than the appliances.

Hello,

in our first apartment we had a closed kitchen and overall a more conservative layout of the rooms. In the current one, we have an open kitchen with a flowing transition into the living and dining room. That was nice until the family grew and the requirements changed. We really miss our closed kitchen, so there will be a closed one again in the house.

Sure, an open kitchen looks more stylish and might be modern / "in," but for us it now has only disadvantages in every respect. Now with a child, the kitchen is only usable when the little one is awake. Even loading the dishwasher wakes the child, and I can’t even think about having a coffee in the morning before work. It also doesn’t matter whether my wife or I are in the kitchen, we want to have our peace.

Choose the kitchen and house variant that fits your daily routines and don’t give a damn about what others think of it or what they would have done differently.

Never closed again...

Odors: no problem, strong downdraft extractor with exhaust, plus 2 large windows....
Order: for my wife/us it is a matter of course to clear away the dishes, with a closed kitchen it would also bother me if I see the used dishes lying around there

Have been living like this for 1 year, nothing bothers us.... I only see advantages for us.

In our apartment, the fairly loud circulating air in the open kitchen is actually disturbing. So as soon as something is being fried, watching TV no longer really works.

In the house, however, the kitchen is more than twice as far from the sofa plus there is a proper exhaust hood that is also nice and quiet. From the sofa, you also don’t look directly into the kitchen (the entire area is laid out in an L-shape).

I think it depends on the individual situation on site.

What I see in many new apartments and houses is a rectangular or square living room, where the kitchen has simply been “slapped” onto one of the walls and basically stands there like a cupboard wall without any further separation. I also find that absolutely unattractive. I have even seen this in fairly high-priced new construction projects here in the region.

We have now been living in the house for half a year and have an open kitchen there, just like we did before in our apartment. I love it. My little one is currently 15 months old and is learning to walk; I think it's great to always be able to keep an eye on her in the living area. I like it when I bake something in the evening and can listen to the TV and talk to my husband at the same time. Everything just happens together, we like that. Ultimately, though, as several others have already pointed out, it's simply a matter of taste.
