The kitchen door is closed, the exhaust fan is running, and the window is open. Of course, some smell can also reach the hallway if the kitchen door is opened occasionally. But the living room is free from cooking smells, and if you briefly open the front door, the hallway is free of odors again.

I also have the most concerns that with children, what I find good today will turn out to be really dumb. As a couple, an open kitchen is definitely the right choice for us, but we also have another retreat room (basically the gamer room ;)). Without it, I think the open kitchen would be difficult, but as it is, it's great for us.

If necessary, this also works with all other rooms with an open kitchen. The argument may not hold much weight.

What I find strange is something like "smelling like a chip shop." What stinks at chip shops is used oil. You don’t use that at home. I like the smells of what I cook and fry. If I don’t want to serve something, I wouldn’t want to eat it either.

For us, an open kitchen is about sociability. It makes the cooking/dining area THE room where everything happens when guests are over. If there is enough space, I might separate a very large cooking/dining kitchen from a small living room.

I couldn’t live with a separate kitchen—exclusion from the rest of the apartment every time I want to prepare food? No fucking way!

But obviously people can be very different on this.

After 8 years of living with an open kitchen, I have never had to clean grease spots off living room cabinets. And that with heavy use. It just doesn’t happen.

We currently live in an apartment with a closed kitchen. The argument about odors is irrelevant to us because: no matter what we cook or fry and close the door, the smell will still get into the living room. Therefore: we have to ventilate every time. And if we want to fry something, then later in the outdoor kitchen, which is also planned.

We do tend towards an open kitchen, but the concerns are more about noise and the visibility of mess.

In the closed kitchen in the old apartment, there was a much stronger smell of food than in the new one. By the way, my food smells and does not stink. Good extractor hood and ventilation system and nothing happens. I found the closed kitchen halfway okay when there were two of us. With a child, I found it unbearable.

What noise? What mess?

Many devices are very quiet. Food processor, hand blender are loud, how often and under what situations do they run? Mess. With an empty dishwasher before cooking, it is usually tidy. I say usually, my husband leaves a battlefield. It doesn't bother me, he has to clean it up after eating.
