Thank you! Full agreement! My colleague said back then, "oh, just an apartment." Now she has twins, a house to pay off, and no money for a vacation for the four of them – classic case of taking over.

What exactly do you think people like me give up with a property that is financed by more than just 20% of the household income? I give up going out to eat weekly, ordering pizza every week, and going out for a proper meal once a month is still possible. I give up the monthly shopping orgies and only buy new clothes 3-4 times a year for a larger amount. Who needs +5 jeans or 3 jackets for every season? I still go on vacation (2-3 times a year (once in Europe, mostly once on another continent)) and mostly give up online shopping. Also, I don’t wander the streets at night. The only thing that is currently less funded is my savings account for the dream of “house construction”.....Surprise....since this has been fulfilled. By the way, everything I listed above I never did or missed except from age 18-23. There are incredibly great places to discover (e.g., hiking, etc.) that cost nothing....even here in Germany. Also, doing sports and meeting with family/friends is usually not particularly expensive.

Thanks for finally a good statement that totally makes sense and unfortunately is losing importance more and more in today’s society... ;(

I like to save for my own home and happily give up various things if I can live in my own house in return.

For me, it would be a punishment to live in rent or in a condominium for life... It’s just no comparison. However, it’s a matter of personal preference, of course.

The punishment for me personally would be having to restrict myself for the house. Just going to the zoo quickly with two children is easily 100€. Or spontaneously going away for a weekend. Or quickly picking up something at the restaurant. True, you don't NEED that to survive, but for me personally, it makes life worth living.

Some people have had to watch their money all their lives, so the fact that they now have to do it for the house makes no difference.
