... as the kitchen is drawn now, the whole kitchen is nothing ;)

Here is also an L-shaped floor plan. From this floor plan, it can be seen that you should rather swap the kitchen and the living room. In the kitchen, there is a large kitchen island and the cabinets on the right have been recessed into the wall. That looks great because you don’t look at a cabinet wall from the dining room. The children's rooms on the upper floor without a long corridor could also be changed as shown in the attached floor plan. Of course, I would also make the children's bathroom bigger. The bed could also be rotated and behind it an open dressing room could be designed. I would definitely place the washing machine upstairs with 3 children. You don’t constantly go two floors down to the basement (unless you have a laundry lady).

Thanks for the floor plans and photos, very helpful! Especially since you get a better idea of how everything will actually look.

Yes, I can already imagine swapping the living room and kitchen. That way, you have the dining areas next to each other inside and outside. Recessing the cupboards into the wall is also a great idea.

I also think the floor plan upstairs turned out well. I have to see whether it works as well if we place the bathroom and dressing room in the north. In our case, the northeast corner has the worst view, so I don’t want a bedroom there.

I am the laundry lady I understand that many find it practical to have the washing machine on the upper floor, but I find that totally unappealing! With 3 children it runs constantly – I usually set it with a timer in the evening so everything is ready to hang/dry by 7:00. I don’t want to hear it then when I’m in bed! And at the moment we have 4 floors, so one less will help too! A laundry chute would be a good idea though!

Now for the 2nd round in the Lion's Den

In the past few weeks, we have considered a couple of alternatives – namely a rectangle, either in a N-S direction or in an E-W direction – but ended up back at the original L-shape. It creates a private zone in the southwest (the neighbors are to the north and one to the east). This also creates a separation on the ground floor between the living room and kitchen/dining area and upstairs between parents and children, which we definitely want.

However, there are some changes.

On the ground floor, the kitchen/dining room are now larger. Since I absolutely wanted a window in the WC, the north side was also replanned. In the NW there is now a guest room/office. We considered whether we should plan for two separate rooms, but find a larger room more flexible. (There is also a second guest room in the basement). The living room is divided by a fireplace, creating a TV room and a small library/seating area. We also want more storage space at the entrance area (3 children) and might move the wall between the library and corridor (this can be seen in the ground floor plan with property). Next to the front door, we would have a bench/small coat rack.

Upstairs, the children's bathroom is now larger, although I think we could still give up some space from the parent's bathroom. There is also now a second mini-office on the east side next to the dressing room. It is very small, but I basically only need space for a laptop and a large screen, thanks to Corona we now work without paper files.

The floor plans are not quite up to date, but these are a bit more detailed. For example, the windows on the east side are missing upstairs.

The facade needs more work, but I have attached the views so you can see the windows etc. A covered terrace will be added in the "L" in the southwest. We will still play around with the north side to see whether vertical or horizontal windows would be better.

I would be grateful for ideas and suggestions for improvement!
