I don't like the living-dining room and the kitchen at all either. The dining area is uncomfortable, especially for the people who look towards the front door and sit with their backs to the window and the fireplace. The living area is a bit tight. The kitchen is a dark corridor. Where the kitchen furniture is, windows are missing (because of HAR). I also find the mirrored sleeping/children's room sensible.
Here is a suggestion on how to divide differently with few changes. It results in nice large south-facing windows, a great kitchen, and a cozy living room. I would definitely put doors to the windbreak and the hallway. I personally find open passages with views into hallways very uncomfortable. The additional door to the "private" hallway also provides noise protection and privacy on the way to the bathroom. The three-sided fireplace is centrally located and can be viewed from the living and dining areas. You could hang the TV on the wall to the left of the fireplace. Possibly a sitting window in the living room.
The only "toad" is that the storage room in the garage cannot be accessed from the house. However, with a covered entrance, you can still get into the house with dry feet if the door to HAR/storage room is located directly near the house wall.
