Number of network sockets; how to plan Wi-Fi in the new building?

More work on the network infrastructure needs to be done for Sonos over LAN. Keyword STP.

Hello everyone,

I’ll just conveniently join in here now. After reading the 14 pages here, I notice that I have somewhat neglected the topic of LAN/access point in our house... luckily there is still some time until the final sample selection. Therefore, I would really appreciate your advice here:
Semi-detached house with 124 sqm and small garden; basement, ground floor, upper floor, attic
Area only about 5.3x11m
Stairwell on the inner wall, in the middle
Exterior walls made of calcium silicate brick, interior walls completely gypsum board only

So far I have planned an empty conduit in the living room, bedroom, K1, K2, and office to then pull in a duplex LAN cable (I found €400 per double LAN socket clearly too expensive...). Until now, we have been using a Tenda Nova mesh system in our rental apartment... thought it was quite good, but now I have read here from you that it can be done much better...

How many APs (for example the Ubiquiti AC Lite mentioned here) would you recommend, are 2 pieces enough (e.g. ground floor and attic)?
Where is the best place to position them? Ground floor and attic each in the stairwell or hallway? On the ceiling or on the wall?
Is the corresponding PoE converter sufficient, or does it make sense to install a suitable PoE switch in the basement (the router should be here)? Which switch would you recommend?

Depending on your recommendation, I would then plan 2-3 empty conduits for this in the hallway/stairwell.

Thanks for your answers!

The APs are ideally on the ceiling, you can find the radiation pattern as a diagram from the manufacturer. However, I also plan to put them on the wall, on a very similar floor plan to yours on the wall of the closed stairwell. So that from there, my floor is basically illuminated away from the neighbor. I plan one on the ground floor and one on the first floor. I will only do the basement if necessary, the attic is the parents' bedroom, so possibly an in-wall access point if really necessary.

2 access points, each on the hallway ceiling on the ground floor and first floor, should do. The HAR is then in the basement? There you can still operate the router as a separate access point yourself.

For the empty conduits, you should at least lay the cables with the longest stretches right away. CAT7, especially as duplex, is a pain to pull over several floors and bends. So from the basement to the attic with 4 bends can easily go wrong and then you end up with an empty outlet. A distribution box halfway eases the problem of course. Or at least have the cable installed by the main contractor electrician where you really need it (for example in the office) and where the cable run is long.

I would take the switch as POE right away, one device and one standby less. And if needed, you can also power more devices than just the 2 access points.

A PoE switch just for two APs is pure waste of money in my opinion. Especially since Ubiquiti is using an unusual standard.

400€ for a LAN socket is a new low record, I would say. That's almost bordering on usury.

But don't expect electricians to line up at your place to pull a few network cables into empty conduits ...
