@TE:
Don't let yourself be talked out of it here. If you want a party basement, then go 4 it. You are also the typical "country bumpkins" and I can understand how cool a party basement is. My parents had one too and maybe someday our basement will also be converted into a "hobby room." Also, the idea that a basement is unnecessary is complete nonsense in my opinion.
You come from a different family situation and have a completely different attitude towards life compared to 90% of the people on this forum.
Again: I would NEVER want to dry my laundry somewhere in the living room and I wouldn't want to put all my stuff in some niches and, inspired by Marie Kondo or whoever, come up with ways to save even more space. That would NEVER be me, just as it isn’t the OP... You just have to accept that. I would rather invest 50k more, save significantly more for 2 years, and not spend money on clothes/vacations or anything else. For me personally, that would be quality of life...
The trend goes towards: Porsche, city life, 20 vacations a year with 500 posts on Instagram, 50-hour workweek with 5k net and putting the kid in daycare. I would NEVER want that... I wish for a family life in the countryside in a beautiful house with lots of room and space, a big garden, etc.
You simply can't have it all, that’s why you have to set priorities.
Don’t let anyone talk you out of it, build your basement, otherwise you (especially) won’t make your girlfriend happy. From how it sounds, you can save exactly in the areas where others here spend like crazy! (Hairdresser, 20 vacations a year, parties en masse, and tons of trips, etc.)... You have no problem vacationing in your own home, in a great house... Then go 4 it!
