But you can actually store suitcases and decorative stuff well in the garage.

I don't find cupboards behind the door particularly practical because cupboard doors and room doors can easily get in each other's way, meaning you always have to be careful whether someone is at the cupboard. We have a shelf behind the door for things you wear again, home stuff, etc. But it has no doors.

So, in causal connection, you prefer to send the residents of the house out to the garage behind the car to get something to put down/trash/things you need/towels rather than storing them behind a cupboard behind the door because the latter is impractical. Note the argumentation ;) You made my day!
