I think it's clever when people plan and build their house so that, for example, after the children have moved out, the upper floor can be easily converted into an independent apartment and rented out. I would definitely do it that way anytime
Never me. And I don't know any grandma or grandpa who is still so easygoing in old age to just accommodate a young family or similar upstairs in their retirement home. That's unrealistic! Who does that? No one unless absolutely necessary. Except if it's their own family. But strangers?
At that age, you are no longer so flexible. Ask your grandparents if they want that.
