Overwhelmed with a simple kitchen counter - who has an idea?

Certainly, a sofa will be placed opposite the stove. Everything else is not decided yet. Philipp was thinking of a kind of bar for two near the kitchen. Sleeping and using the computer will be on the mezzanine. A closet is in the hallway, and no further one is needed in the living area. Additional storage options are available in the knee wall on the mezzanine, so no dressers or similar furniture are needed. Surely, there will also be room for a shelf.

If you move the row one line deeper, the refrigerator would also have to be moved forward. That means you would need a cover panel over the entire depth to cover the 10 cm at the back. Cover panels are expensive.

But I think there is no space for this cover panel.

With extra depth, the base cabinets can be purchased with extra depth (not the sink base cabinet), and the wall cabinets can be hung with some distance from the wall. The cooktop would have to be installed a little deeper.

I don’t know if a small island with bar seating is still desired.

The example is not extra deep, has a 6-grid system and a 78 cm carcass. Slightly cheaper are Nobilia and Nolte with a somewhat lower carcass.

How tall are the boys?

So... I would find a dishwasher very important. Even if the men might not put things away now – if they have the choice between loading and unloading the dishwasher or washing by hand, they will probably choose the dishwasher. Also, maybe in the near future, some ladies will be visiting or even moving in.

Therefore, I would plan for a dishwasher, one sink, a combination unit with microwave and convection oven, and a small fridge with a freezer compartment that can at least fit a few pizza boxes and a small bag of ice cubes. A two-burner stove should be enough.

An extra deep countertop is great; I once had one in a small kitchen. The countertop was 80cm deep. The wall cabinets above were easy to reach; for the upper shelves there was a small step. Such a deep countertop is brilliant for accommodating a toaster, kettle, coffee maker without lacking workspace. I also find many cabinets important to possibly store some small supplies – these might also increase in the coming years, as well as kitchen appliances, etc.

: Thank you very much for your effort and the very attractive draft! I'll show it to my wife. The greater depth is really great, the boys are not giants, with 1.75 and 1.85 the wall cabinets should fit. Price-wise it will be tight, because both wanted a wood stove as a highlight. Together with the fireplace, they devour a decent chunk of money.

: Definitely no dishwasher. I don't want to get annoyed. In our kitchen, only the connections are provided. Washing by hand is really no big deal. Some things of ours are not dishwasher safe, like knives, cast iron pots, iron pans, handmade ceramics, teapot...

Why is there something to be annoyed about? Depending on the situation, I would have to wash pots, pans, plates, cups, glasses all multiple times every day without a dishwasher if cooking more than once on the weekend, and then also for the guests... no! That would mean standing in the kitchen for an extra three quarters of an hour.

Unfortunately, I get annoyed when my things are treated disrespectfully. Due to a lack of better self-management in this regard, I am shutting down a source of everyday annoyance. When guests have been here, I find it relaxing to look back on the events together with my wife and tidy up at the same time. For two people, washing up immediately is no big deal; we know this from the motorhome (even without a dishwasher), and when the family is together, we simply wash, dry, and put away together. When cooking, I have made it a habit to wash and put away parts that are no longer needed right away. No chaos in the kitchen. A friend takes the opposite approach and has two dishwashers in the kitchen. These are cheaper than the base cabinet, and he never has to unload clean dishes. One is dirty, one is clean. Everyone is different.
