We might be a bit extreme in this regard and I have to revise the statement "we don't look at the money"... Normally at home, we budget about 100 euros for food and 50 euros for leisure/eating out per week. In this vacation week, it was 70 euros per day! So for us, more money per day. The accommodation was 40 euros per night, as I said, a small holiday apartment through acquaintances. The journey is not worth mentioning since we are from Lower Saxony... It really was like that. :) But it doesn't have to suit everyone. We live very frugally and make money envelopes for everything, the rest goes into a savings account at the beginning of the month. But we don't feel like we are missing out because of this; on the contrary. Our children don't either. They are still under 5 and don't eat a large pizza at a restaurant and are "happy" with used toys and second-hand clothes. That will probably change. :)

Apart from that, most things you do with small children are free: playground, going to the beach, hiking in the mudflats, farm tour with pony riding (also free), going to the library when it rains...

You don’t have to exaggerate, we were four (children 7 and 9) hiking and swimming in the Black Forest for 3 weeks, did a few trips like Schloss Hohenzollern etc., and we definitely spent less than €3000, almost €1000 of that for the cheap holiday apartment.

You don’t have to go to tourist hotspots and eat at the beachfront every day. For our children, the cheap outdoor pools and hiking in the Wutach Gorge were the highlights. Sure, we would also like to have a hotel and eat out every day, but as a family that’s just not affordable.

The North Sea isn’t just the North Sea. On the mainland, with a few exceptions (SPO and co), there really are still affordable apartments, on Sylt... well. The same applies to the other costs. "Eating out every day" for one person is just a fish sandwich (last year on Amrum already 6€ each :o) for lunch and for another a 3-course meal in a restaurant.

However, I think we also spent about ~2500€ last year for 10 days (the three of us), but that was largely due to the apartment, because we were much too late for the good and cheap ones.

To get back to the topic from the North Sea again:

I would do that if I were you!

I was on vacation this summer for three weeks with three children for significantly less - Versailles, Bordeaux, Costa Daurada in Spain and back with a stop in Albi. Very good accommodations (except in Spain by the sea, where the fully equipped tent-apartment was sufficient). The week at the North Sea for €3500 is already luxury. On Sunday, we're going to Lanzarote for 8 days - except for food, but very good accommodations (entire apartments/houses) and a rental car for under €1000.
