We built a 135 sqm house 10 years ago. Without regard for former children, future grandchildren, or parents in care. Things always turn out differently than you think. If one of our parents is left alone and can no longer manage and suddenly becomes clingy (i.e., does not want to go to a nursing home as planned), then we will set up a 34 sqm mobile home in the garden. Okay, there is no direct access to the main house, but I see that as the least of our problems. You could build an airlock, a roof, or something similar… Maybe that would also be an alternative to the classic gable roof house for a 4-person household with a grumpy permanent resident in old age?!

This way you will manage the property best with the tree.

The staircase not in L shape, then it works quite well with the knee wall.

That would be an alternative if neither the grumpy permanent guest nor the building need were already there – he is already living here with us and still owns half of the house and yard, and in addition, after 65 years the house is quite "worn out" (original roof, ground floor with original insulation (i.e., none), basement damp to wet, cracks in the brick joints...) so a massive core renovation, refurbishment, actually an extension would be necessary AND yet you would still need the tiny house (which would then also have to stand outside the building window). And even though I really appreciate the charm of the settlement house with the steep roof, I do not consider that sensible (not even the actual walls are particularly sturdy, I can scrape out the mortar with my finger. The mere fact that I can reach the sand-lime bricks in several places is not good ;)

That is also the house position we are currently aiming for, and I am currently sketching the double quarter-turn staircase :)

I can help you with that: That's what I meant.

I also meant everything around the staircase, for the stairs there is the excellent overview in the pinned thread ;)

I think you misunderstood me or you have a knot in your head! I am not talking about renovating a living space, which wouldn’t suit you anyway. Your new build and demolition of the existing house and instead a mobile home for the senior, instead of an elaborate renovation…
