Since we want roof windows, I think anything over 1.5m knee wall height is difficult; however, anything less would greatly reduce the attic space given the house width and roof pitch, so I've sketched it like this for now. So either you go up the stairs bent over or have a dormer/a roof window in that area to provide sufficient headroom at the stair exit. Or somehow use a different staircase. According to ALKIS, some neighboring buildings are also two-story, even though they are in the same zoning plan area. So if you don’t go completely overboard, something might be possible, but it would certainly be easier without.

I think you should say goodbye to the attic dream. You have a mega basement and the upper floor is already quite large because of the [Einliegerwohnung]. Why do you absolutely want to go into the top? In my opinion, the money is better invested elsewhere. A staircase will always be difficult here. The only thing I could imagine is a spiral staircase. And that just so you can barely stand on maybe 2m depth.

Hmm, so one desired background is the current attic - it is about 1.7m wide and just under 2m high (60° roof pitch) and is a very cozy bedroom and workspace. But you can only get there by ladder. That combined with the wish for both parents (so me + wife) to have their own room, which is not the kitchen and the workspace, a room you don't have to tidy up, a room where you can slam the door if you think it's necessary.

But yes, maybe "my" room will have to be the workshop basement after all and instead of the room that the stairs currently occupy, one tries to get the "sewing room" into the upper floor...

How did your start look like ?

I had initially started similarly but then abandoned the approach with the 1/4 spiral staircase. Ultimately, I had stopped at this stage:

I have to say that I haven’t optimized the dimensions much here yet. I suspect that a lot could still be reduced.
What was important to me:
- Secondary apartment living space with southern orientation and terrace option there. Barrier-free bathroom
- Main apartment with pantry
- Guest WC with window and proper coat closet
- Accessibility to the attic peak – it must be precisely calculated whether the slope above the staircase might require a skylight or even a small dormer. I think a skylight could suffice. (Knee wall assumed at 1.5m – that would already be over one floor => exceptional permit or the architect manages it differently with the headroom.)

As you can see, the windows and patio doors are not included yet – I had gotten stuck on that. ;)

I have also already started, so far only completed the ground floor. However, I am using a similar ground floor approach as , but with an external dimension of only 8.8x13m... The width of the plot is only just under 16 m at the front, and if there is still to be a garage/carport on the north side, there should be some space besides the boundary clearance on the south side... that was my thought on it.

I definitely find the staircase position exciting and will definitely try it out a bit – however, when it comes to the external dimensions, I am more in agreement with , longer than 13m probably won’t work because of the tree, and I wouldn’t want it wider than about 8.5m either, because of the terrace + carport. So I’d gladly welcome input in that size range ;) We have also moved away from the pantry, although with the staircase position it really makes good use of the narrow space behind it. A guest bathroom with a window is also pretty cool, thanks a lot in any case! To achieve a single-story building, the knee wall would have to be 1.3m high (if I haven’t miscalculated). That would be fine inside too, but it would of course make the stairs even more annoying. Or change the roof pitch, but that wouldn’t look as good (in my opinion). So I’ll continue tinkering :)
