The 1.20 format in the grid pattern creates a very unsightly, clearly noticeable joint exactly in the middle.

I vote for much smaller tiles: 20x20 or 15x15 or something like that. The old tile formats from the Herrenhäuser still look good and they are about 100 years old. In the 50s, small tiles were also used – they still look good today (depending on the color... :D). I think that large-format tiles do not "dress" a room at all but are mainly just a "covering." I don’t understand why everyone is so eager for bigger tiles. My neighbors almost all have somewhat larger tiles. In the elongated but narrow hallway, it looks pretty stupid in my opinion, about 3.5 tiles in width or something like that.

Old house with old charm and then matching tiles. New house with modern "interior" then also with large tiles. I always advocate for as large as possible. Especially small rooms appear larger and calmer with large tiles, because the floor then does not consist only of joints – which can lead to many dirty and unsightly joints, especially in the hallway.

60 x 60 fits pretty well I’d say

Quieter perhaps already with few joints. But it also quickly looks like flooring and not like part of the furnishings, I think.

This is how it looks in my hallway, with lots of joints and few tiles. As an example of inexpensive and small tiles.

Not every new house is furnished in a modern way either. I also cannot gain anything from these large tiles. We have 30 x 60 in the bathroom and toilet, but I already find that the largest size I want. Actually, it should have been 30 x 30 plus 10 x 10 in the Mediterranean style, but they were partially no longer available because production is now only according to current trends. In the hallway, we laid travertine in a Roman pattern, which vary in size from 20 x 20 to 40 x 60. Since they had to be impregnated anyway, the grout lines were naturally impregnated as well, so nothing gets dirty that quickly.
