That always sounds nice and good. However, the infrastructure has to be in place. Privately, if you have your own home, no problem. But what if there is no charging station neither in the village nor at the workplace? Then we are back to the time issue and at least 40 minutes x 2 per week for refueling.

And it’s not about the distance, but rather about the time. 25 km can be covered in 15-20 minutes, but also in 1-1.5 hours if you have to go into the city.

The poor company car drivers. I can’t believe it. For example, you pay 350 € all inclusive, which would easily cost a private person around 1000 €.

Now it's getting ridiculous. Some do that, albeit few, even by bike.

Phew, interesting statement. 95% of my academic friends, early 30s to mid-30s, NRW, commute >25 km (one way). Nowadays you have to be a bit more flexible regarding the workplace. There’s no more working right outside your door... many factors come into play now (due to globalization: loss of jobs in the region, real estate prices, etc.).

But the pandemic brought one positive thing: many companies are now considering home office even after the pandemic. That is good news because there are indeed tasks where it doesn’t matter at all whether you do them at the office or at home.

It also depends on what those 25 km look like. My wife takes only slightly longer for 50 km on the highway than I do for 15 km straight through the big city. By the way, I would need significantly longer than she does using public transport.
