I think spots are really nice, but maybe I’m not quite up-to-date :D Expanding the basement rooms isn’t possible, there’s only a sidewalk in front. A conservatory at the back would certainly be possible, but I’m not a fan of conservatories :-) I think we will try to get the most out of the existing space and make do with it.

I find that conservatories always look a bit cobbled together in connection with an old building :D

What is the state of the art when it comes to lighting? Am I being so old-fashioned?

A ceiling height of 2.40 I find okay, you can live well with that. I wouldn’t go significantly below that. If you’re doing a complete renovation anyway, I would only consider underfloor heating with a low build-up height, then it will work out.

Let's say they were really awesome junk in the 80s and in the 90s every halfway competent DIYer proudly installed them themselves. Today, you really only do that in hallways or at most in bathrooms. Maybe in commercial spaces still.

That is really a matter of taste. That’s why there are lighting retailers with dozens of thousands of different lamps online. I’d say what feels like is "in" right now, in my opinion, are lamps that match the interior – so if you like country style, you buy matching lamps, and if you prefer industrial design, you just buy those. Both can look great. Also, ceiling spots and flat ceiling lamps, in my opinion, have not been very popular for a while. Especially in living areas, I see more pendant lamps or stylish wall lamps. But of course, that also depends on the existing outlets. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter. What counts is what your wife likes. :D
