How to keep an overview of all maintenance (renovation) tasks on the house?

I wouldn’t even set up a separate calendar for that, but simply categorize the "Pflege/TODO-Termine Haus" accordingly.

Good evening,

I’ll give it another try ;)
My partner and I both work and have two small kids. Our daily life is quite full. We are young homeowners and while we want our house to be "well maintained," we’ve realized that there are many things we just don’t keep track of. Therefore, I would find it very helpful to have an app that, after a few inputs about my house, spits out a preselection of the "common" ToDos around the house. It would save me the research and also the "mental load," meaning the thinking about all the other things that still need to be done. I would then simply schedule these ToDos individually according to my needs.
Examples
- Clean gutters
- Clean trash bins
- Treat/paint wooden frame windows
- Clean shutters
- Check/clean drains
- Clean birdhouses
- Check basement walls for moisture
- ....
Many of the points above we have never done in 4 years. And not because we never noticed them, but because we never planned to do them. It’s not that we lack a sense of duty or don’t see the responsibility that comes with the house. The past years were just filled with work, family, renovation, etc.

My assumption is that maybe many "young" and inexperienced homeowners experience the same. Sure, I could sit down one morning, open an Excel sheet, Google, and then gather all the topics together. But I would really like something like this in a kind of "house manager app" perhaps with additional useful functions.

The only thing I have found so far is Haus-Guru. But I don’t think the app is well done. In the US market, there’s my.homemanager.io.

Have a nice evening.

I am simply made that way:

- Clean gutters when they drip
- Clean trash bins when they stink
- Treat/paint wooden frame windows when they are rotting (well, just about to, I mean) ;)
- Clean shutters when they are dirty or "scratching"
- Check/clean drains when they no longer drain properly or smell
- Clean birdhouses when no one wants to live inside anymore
- Check basement walls for moisture when you are already down there

If you had spent the research time and testing time instead on researching common maintenance tasks/TODOs, you would probably now have a good collection of links with helpful tips for the tasks and, in the process, could have filled a calendar with recurring appointments.

I think I'll eventually publish the homeowner checklist on my blog. You can then print it out, stick it on the fridge/the front door/on the TV, and check off with a pen ;)

Many things are also not always due. Painting windows/garden sheds/... for example, you just do it when necessary. Inspection rounds naturally happen when cleaning the windows. I would check the gutters once in autumn if possible, when most of the leaves have fallen. Clean them as needed; here in the new development area we certainly have less to do than in an older house from the 70s.

Hi,

Modern fancy stuff! I have my proven stone tablets here....! :-)

Seriously though, isn’t that a bit over the top? I can just about keep a few craft-related topics in my head, insurances and stuff run via standing orders or direct debits, and to keep track of the ventilation filter replacement intervals, a simple note with the date of the last change is just stuck to the device.

It’s a house, not a moon rocket....

Best regards,

Andreas
