Which is what really makes the thread worth reading.

I did not read here that the OP thinks he is great. He is proud of his achievement and is allowed to be. As already mentioned, the do-it-yourselfers are rather the exceptions here. Unfortunately, you can notice that quite quickly from the reactions, and that is also the reason why I never explicitly presented our renovation here.

Oh, and otherwise I find it difficult anyway to precisely quantify the costs with self-performed work. I actually can't say exactly what our renovation has cost so far. I can say what the craftsmen wrote on the invoices. But we have bought building materials here and there, partly also from private sellers. Here a plank, there a pack of screws. Every few months a new bigger project and in between a few small ones. I would wildly estimate that we should be around €60,000 so far or so. For electrical work, 3 small bathrooms, flooring, interior doors, windows, drywall, rooms, some dry screed, roof interior insulation, paint, wallpaper, sanitary rough installation, various types of plaster and who knows what. From 2017-2022. But there is still quite a bit to come until we're done and satisfied.

I don’t get the feeling that DIYers are uncommon here. You just shouldn’t believe everything that is claimed. For example, the gentleman from #73 who said he hadn’t lifted a finger. Not long ago, he was complaining about how expensive the soffits at Town & Country were and that he had done them in 3 days for practically nothing. And since I know Town & Country’s scope of work description, I believe that wasn’t the only thing ;)

Of course, this isn’t a DIY forum. If you want to meet tinkerers, you probably have to go somewhere else. And you must not forget with self-performed work that a lot has to fit together. Not only the obvious things like the question of expertise. You also have to live close enough, you have to know the right people who can operate a mini excavator or something similar, and then your health has to cooperate all the time. In summer, I had an inguinal hernia (probably sustained on the construction site), it took 6 weeks until I got the surgery date, and then another 6 weeks of rest. That quickly adds up to 3 months during which you are out for most of the work on the construction site.

And yes, there is a lot of nitpicking here. But it is mostly justified, and if you ask for feedback, you have to endure unpleasant questions as well.

It's a bit strange to introduce yourself here, whether you say that you did nothing yourself or that you did everything yourself. Result: "look at me, I am different, better... you can now ask me questions about how I did it"

That is quite a peculiar rhetoric. I haven't read that here before. Always just project introductions or the occasional DIYer here who provides helpful answers to the relevant questions, more or less permanently. This way, there is also added value and recipients of empirical knowledge, see for example saniererNRW123
You post a question in a forum, and there is at least one user who knows the answer and comes with good advice.
But that does not only apply to the DIY sector, but to any area where the expert gets involved.
If someone thinks they are the added value itself and need a stage atmosphere, there is the option of a blog, vlog and/or becoming an influencer. Of course, you can also give adult education courses or provide value to others in other ways.

Thank you very much. Finally someone who does not "read something into it" => thinking highly of oneself. I am a little proud, yes, but not more than that. Because it was not only my achievements. Rather very glad not to have invested a very large fortune (e.g. 500k+) into the house and then pay it off for 30 years or more. I just did not know (when I registered a few days ago) that the "have it done" faction is more represented here.
