It doesn't save you a single trip up the stairs... it only has the advantage that the laundry is not lying around in the rooms upstairs, so it's not comparable to a room upstairs with a washing machine and dryer.
The laundry does wash itself indeed, I don't have to sit next to it, a bit of exercise without carrying a full laundry basket down to the basement won't hurt anyone. We relocated this laundry chute from the upper floor to the ground floor.
Besides, I don't dry my laundry upstairs but ideally on the terrace or in the winter directly in the utility room inside the house. So the trip up the stairs is indeed saved.
I would never come up with the idea to plan the washing machine upstairs.
