I had a closed kitchen and never want to have that again. That's what ventilation systems and extractor fans are for. are you continuing with the outdoor area at all or putting everything on hold until you know how you want to proceed?
I can appreciate both. However, in a closed kitchen, I would like to have a lot of space for a large dining table and a bar/counter. Then it would basically be the common room, especially when guests are over, and the living room would be more of the private family corner.
