I was the Polish "cleaning lady" in our student fraternity and earned extra money for rent etc. by keeping the fraternity house clean.

Especially for families with children, homeownership is increasingly becoming a luxury. Just take a look over in the thread where the potential builder is getting cold feet. What is being asked here for rent or for a terraced house is insane. Those who can build are certainly not poor. This does not help with the topic either. The OP really just has to consider whether she is happier with a new house. I see that as questionable. When building a house, you need two things: money and time. Money is available, time is limited. Spending a nice afternoon with the children choosing floor coverings only to realize that the one from four years ago is quite nice, but the one in the back is better. It costs twice as much but...

Well, the thing is actually really simple and it has already been said: if building and everything that goes with it is fun and now - to put it exaggeratedly - seen as a "hobby" (that’s the case with us, others can’t comprehend it at all), then go for it! But if it’s only about "bigger" and "more beautiful," without any real desire behind it, then I would definitely tend to improving the existing house. And please: I would like to see the house from which you couldn't get anything else out! Get yourselves a - good! - architect if you lack the imagination.

Is it really a "hobby" for you all the time? Because right now I really enjoy building and I enjoy both selecting and coordinating, and I can even imagine doing that for other people (for example, like a developer does). But the thought of building again for myself shortly after moving in gives me nightmares... and I don't think my marriage would survive that either, because although it’s all fun, it is stressful nonetheless :)

Yes, it is. We have shared this passion for many years (actually, always). My husband originally wanted to study architecture but unfortunately didn’t have the required grade point average. Drawing floor plans on the weekend or going to the building center is a part of our routine – just like that, even when there’s no new house planned.

My spontaneous first association was rather Ilsebill Fischer ;-) But only if you don’t count the fake troll. In the past twelve months we had two here who would regard such social housing *LOL* as , , or do not even glance at: a lawyer’s wife from the Taunus area and a gentleman, I believe from Wandlitz, with if I remember correctly four adult children, three of whom are in the chief physician income group. He had already planned his first villa himself and now wanted to expand in retirement. However, it may be that you were still only active in the countryside then ;-)
