Keyword: burn-out, depression etc. ..in my opinion the biggest risk in my field..the BU is indeed suitable for that.
Everyone has to decide that for themselves. I don’t see it as necessary to insure this. Several people in my circle have had burn out. But that’s not a permanent condition. After 6 months the people are back again. The BU doesn’t pay out at all, a daily sickness allowance would be the right thing for that. I also skipped that during my self-employment (I was considering it at first) and instead built up a cash reserve – like you. Depression is also a tricky thing. The insurance will drag you through all instances before a single euro is paid out, because such illnesses simply aren’t visible. Then, promptly after 6 months, you get your happy pills and suddenly on paper you are fit for work again!
These are risks I address not with insurances, but with prevention. If I work too much, change in character etc., my wife tells me. Pull the emergency brake before it’s too late. Social network instead of insurance contracts.
I support Dirk’s idea that you don’t have to pay off the house at all. If people see home ownership as the ideal (or idealized) form of provision, even see it as a life goal, there’s no point in starting there. That’s simply a different mentality. Use it, yes, own it – why? Especially since in terms of returns, the calculation usually goes against ownership.
