So if at 7000 netto only a few hundred per month remain, maybe it’s not the right time to build a house. We started saving >15 years before the construction began. Even if it was very little at the beginning. Our fixed costs are certainly much higher today as well but after a certain income level they don’t increase any further. I don’t know..maybe at a few thousand euros netto per month. Now at 7000..10000..partly 15000 netto per month it doesn’t make any difference anymore. Only the savings rate changes and not the fixed costs. At least we don’t constantly adjust our standard of living to the income. Consider us rather down-to-earth. Regards, Steffen

Of course that’s possible too, I also don’t think I ever doubted that. But if you have the means, you can spend €7,000 very quickly. That’s all I wanted to say. Preferences are different, after all—not everyone sees the need to hoard money in the account. To what extent that is actually sensible remains to be seen.

But it can also be different. I can also earn 7,500 net and easily spend 3,000 on cold rent. On top of that come high additional costs, a cleaning help, and an expensive hobby ... There are plenty of ways in this world to get rid of your money. It is certainly also true that with increasing income comes the need for some people to spend more on certain things or at least believe they have to. Daycare is one such point for "having to," car and silk tie for "believing" – although there can also be quite real constraints in these cases that you can't avoid.

400€ for a bike is too much or too little, in your opinion?

Have you ever looked at what a well-equipped Beetle costs? And a 1 Series BMW is also significantly more expensive than a small Kia.

Again: I’m not saying you have to spend 7k—but you certainly can very easily.

Well, for 400 you can’t even get the wheels or the fork for the bike, so far too little. From 1500 on you can get something reasonably usable...

Sure, a new one costs quite a bit, but his is already a few years old and a 5-year-old 1 Series BMW isn't really a status symbol...

People... it's not about whether you can spend 7000. Of course... also 70000 and even 7 million, people surely get that "blown on their head" monthly.

May I remind you that the OP wants to build a house (just under a million)?
